Kanchkolar Kofta Curry – Green Banana Kofta Curry

Banana kofta is a specialty of the Eastern states of India. This kofta recipe includes raw bananas and potatoes – mashed potatoes give some binding strength to the mushy banana koftas.

Banana kofta is a rich Indian curry with the deep fried potato and banana koftas floating in it. Definitely not a low calorie health food but delicious and rich nonetheless.
Ingredients
For the koftas
  • 2 green bananas, peeled and cut into half
  • 2 green chillies, chopped finely
  • 1 medium onion, ground to a fine paste
  • 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1 egg, whisked
  • 1 tablespoon besan flour (chickpea flour)
  • 7-8 raisins, soaked in a little warm water
  • salt and sugar, to taste
  • oil for deep frying
For the gravy
  • 1 large potato, cubed into medium pieces, parboiled to reduce cooking time.
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 small onion, chopped finely (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 tablespoons hung curd
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 bunch coriander leaves, finely chopped
  • salt and sugar, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons mustard oil
Instructions
  1. Boil the green bananas in salted water until soft enough to mash.
  2. Mash and add all the other ingredients mentioned for the Koftas from green chillies to salt and sugar. Mix well.
  3. Make small balls out of this mixture and deep fry in hot oil. Remove and drain on absorbent kitchen towels to remove the excess oil.
  4. For the gravy, heat 2 tablespoons of mustard oil and add the bay leaf and the cumin seeds, saute until they crackle.
  5. Add the chopped onion and fry till soft. Next add the turmeric powder, hung curd, salt and sugar to taste, and fry nicely until the oil starts to separate.
  6. Add the par-boiled potatoes and stir fry for a couple of minutes.
  7. Add the fried koftas and coat well with the masala.
  8. Add a cup of warm water and bring to boil.
  9. Lastly add the chopped coriander leaves and garam masala.
  10. Serve hot with roti, parathas, or rice.
