Cripps Pink (sold as Pink Lady™) was developed in the 1970s by John Cripps in Western Australia, and is a cross between Golden Delicious and Lady Williams. This same breeding programme also led to Cripps Red (sold as Sundowner™) – which shares the same parentage. Lady Williams is not a particularly well known apple variety in Europe, but has been quite widely grown in Australia, having been discovered as a chance seedling in the 1930s. It is probably from Lady Williams that Cripps Pink (sold as Pink Lady™) gets its distinct colouring.

The Origin of Pink Lady® Apples

In 1973, John Cripps, an Australian inspiration, came up with the idea to naturally cross two varieties, Golden Delicious and a Lady Williams apple to create a new apple, the Pink Lady® apple. By doing this, Cripps was combining the best features of two apples to create something better.

This resulted in a stirring breakthrough in the apple industry and for consumers; with the new Pink Lady® apple not falling far from the tree and becoming an instant taste success. It is their distinctive pink colouring, fizzy flavour and mouth-watering crunch that have made them Australia’s number 1 apple. It wasn’t long before the news spread and the rest of the world had also discovered the taste sensation of Pink Lady® apples.

By 1996, over 1 million Pink Lady® trees were planted in Australia, producing more than 10,000 tonnes of Pink Lady® apples.

Today, they are still Australia’s favourite apple and are now grown in around 15 different countries with the suitable climate and sold across more than 30 countries worldwide.

Now in his 80s, John Cripps is a fully-fledged Australian hero – the plant-breeder who produced the first ever Pink Lady® and forever changed the apple industry.[endofglossaryentry]
