Nakji Bokkeum – Korean Spicy Chilli Octopus


Nakji bokkeum ( 낙지볶음) is a popular dish in Korea. A sweet and spicy octopus stir fry dish, it is a classic Korean favourite, often served with buckwheat noodles or rice. Octopus is a low-calorie food so it is believed to be good for stamina. In Korea, nakji bokkeum is served spicy so people usually eat shellfish soup with it to reduce the sensation of hotness.

 

Nakji Bokkeum - Korean Spicy Chilli Octopus

Ingredients
  • 500 g octopus
  • ½ onion, sliced ½ cm thick
  • 2 chillies, sliced on the bias
  • 2 spring onions, sliced on the bias
  • ¼ carrot, slice thinly
  • 4 shiitake mushrooms, quartered
For sauce
  • ¼ cup chilli paste
  • 2 tablespoons chilli powder
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic
Instructions
  1. Wash octopus, cut the legs into 8cm lengths, open head and take out inside, quarter the head. Drain well.
  2. Mix all ingredients for sauce
  3. Combine sauce with octopus and marinate for 10 minutes.
  4. Heat pan on a medium high heat, cook octopus for 3-4 minutes or until done.
